NASS members are invited to a free webinar on Wednesday 17th January 2024, 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm, run by BILD and its Restraint Reduction Network (RRN) on the development of new restraint training standards for schools.

The RRN Training Standards were published in 2019 as a response to a lack of quality assurance in regard to training content and trainer competence. They relate to training which has a restrictive intervention component. The Standards are mandatory in health and social care services that support people with mental health conditions, learning disabilities and autistic people.

The RRN Training Standards focus on human rights and preventing people becoming distressed in the first place to reduce reliance on restrictive practices, helping keep everyone (teachers and pupils) safe.

The Standards ensure that preventative skills are taught before people learn how to restrain. The Standards also ensure training is based on a Training Needs Analysis so that staff receive proportionate training.

Version 1 was independently evaluated and found to make positive change in health and social care settings. The Equality and Human Rights Commission has recommended to DfE that the Standards are adapted for schools.

The Restraint Reduction Network is now developing version 2 of the Training Standards, engaging with schools and headteachers to ensure they are appropriately tailored for school settings.
